This page is the walk through the rites in Makkah, after you are already in ihram. Getting the permit, the visa, and the miqat is on How to start Umrah. It gives no ruling where the schools differ. Follow the scholar with your group.
When you reach the Sacred Mosque
A Ministry of Hajj and Umrah visit guide says that after you enter ihram and reach the Grand Mosque, Umrah there begins with tawaf around the Kaaba. Tawaf is seven circuits. The same guide says that after those circuits you pray two short rak’ahs behind the Maqam of Ibrahim, peace be upon him.
Men wear the two unstitched cloths of ihram. How the cloth sits on the shoulder during tawaf is taught differently in the schools. Do what your group scholar shows you.
Sa’i
After tawaf, the same ministry guide says you walk between Safa and Marwah. That walk is sa’i. Safa and Marwah are at the mosque. Follow the signed way.
Hair, then ihram ends
The ministry guide says that after tawaf and sa’i, the man shaves his head or shortens his hair, and the woman shortens her hair. That completes Umrah, and what was forbidden in ihram becomes allowed again.
The words you say during the circuits, and small differences between schools, are not fixed on this page. Ask your group scholar, and read the ministry’s own guide before you travel. Rules change.
