Sacred sites

These are the places the rites are tied to. This is a map in words.

Makkah

  • Al-Masjid al-Haram. The Sacred Mosque. Umrah and Hajj both come here.
  • The Kaaba. The building at the centre of the mosque. Tawaf is the circuits around it.
  • Safa and Marwah. The two points of sa’i, inside the mosque today.
  • Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. The grounds east of Makkah used during the days of Hajj. They are not part of a normal Umrah.

Madinah

  • Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. The Prophet’s Mosque. Visiting it is not one of the rites of Umrah or Hajj. Many pilgrims go before or after. A tourist eVisa’s terms say non-Muslims may not enter this mosque or the Sacred Mosque in Makkah.

Names and access rules can change. Check the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for the current guidance, and follow your group on the ground.
