Many pilgrims stay in hotels that are a short ride, rather than a short walk, from Masjid al-Haram. Taxis are easy to find, but at prayer times traffic near the Haram slows to a crawl. The Makkah Bus network is one of the official ways to make that journey.
This guide covers the practical side: where official information lives, how to plan a trip from your hotel, and how to make the ride calm. It does not cover any rulings of Umrah. For those, ask a qualified scholar or use the guidance on Nusuk.
Quick answer
Short answer: The Makkah Bus is a public bus network run under the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites. Use the official Makkah Buses app to book your trip and check the route timetables published by the Royal Commission. Ask your hotel which route serves your area, leave early before prayers, and keep your card or app ready before boarding.
What the Makkah Bus is
The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites describes Makkah Buses as a project of its General Transport Center, with 12 routes covering main roads, secondary streets and links between neighbourhoods, serving both residents and guests of the Holy Mosque. Route timetables are published on that page.
Before you ride
- Official sources: the RCMC Makkah Buses page and the Makkah Buses app.
- Plan in the app: RCMC invites riders to book their trip through the app.
- Tickets: check current options in the app before you ride.
- Ask your hotel: reception usually knows the nearest stop.
We have not listed fares or hours here, because these can change. Check the app or the RCMC route timetables on the day you travel.
Planning a trip from your hotel
From hotel to Haram
1
Download the official Makkah Bus app before you arrive, while you have time and a good connection.
2
Enter your hotel as the start point and Masjid al-Haram as your destination.
3
Note the stop name where you will get off, and screenshot it in case your signal drops.
4
Ask hotel reception to confirm the nearest stop and which direction to wait on.
5
Leave early. Aim to arrive well before the prayer, not just in time.
6
Plan the walk from the stop to your gate. Our guide to finding your way in Masjid al-Haram helps here.
Bus, taxi or walking?
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Makkah Bus | Regular trips, saving on taxis | Crowds just before and after prayers |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | Elderly relatives, luggage, late nights | Road closures near the Haram |
| Walking | Hotels close to the central area | Heat in the middle of the day |
Busy times and crowds
The busiest moments are usually just before a prayer and straight after it, especially Fajr, Maghrib and the Friday prayer. If you can, travel a little earlier and stay in the Haram a while after the prayer, letting the first rush clear before heading back.
Travelling with family
If you are with elderly parents or young children, keep the group together at the stop and agree a meeting point near your gate in case you are separated. Many families use the bus for the outward trip and a taxi for the return.
Warning
Always follow directions from security staff and crowd marshals. Road and gate access near the Haram can change at short notice on busy days.
Getting help
If you leave something on the bus, contact the Makkah Buses service through its official app as soon as you can, and note the route and time you travelled. For general pilgrim services, permits and official updates, Nusuk is the official platform.
Moving between cities
The Makkah Bus works inside Makkah. For travel between the two holy cities, see our guide to travelling between Makkah and Madinah.
